” Virtual Organizations for Open Grids on the Example of Shibboleth”

ecurity in grid computing has recently become a more and more important
subject. This is due to at least two reasons. The first is adoption of
grid solutions in a commercial environment, where security is an issue of
utmost importance. The other is that grids are becoming truly complex and
many of them federate resources from a large number of administrative
domains, therefore traditional approaches are inadequate, to a greater
extent than ever before. The demand for new paradigms and solutions for
grid security results in a significant number of new products. Moreover,
there is a large number of experts who cannot reach an agreement among
themselves, not to mention regular users. In this lecture we aim at
defining new challenges for grid security, as well as presenting the most
promising concepts and solutions.

One of the most interesting among the available solutions is Shibboleth,
which will be described in details. Shibboleth is a middleware package
enabling inter-institutional Single SignOn. It allows sites to make
informed authorization decisions based on attributes for individual access
of protected online resources in a privacy-preserving manner. Its pros and
cons will be discussed, as well as examples of real-world application. The
lecture will be concluded by some remarks on further improvements to the
framework.
